How Often Should You Change Your Hot Tub Water?

There are a lot of reasons why you should get a hot tub but one thing new hot tub owners often worry about is how to maintain it. This is not as difficult as many people think and you quickly get the hang of the basics once you start using the tub for real.

An important issue to consider is how often you have your hot tub is serviced. As with any big pieces of equipment, the better it is maintained, the longer it is going to last.

A service is different from regular maintenance which you carry out yourself. It requires a specialist who basically checks the hot tub from top to bottom to make sure there are no problems. You do the same for your gas boiler, so you should certainly consider it for your hot tub.

A Guide to Changing Your Water

If you have a regular service, you should expect your tub to work efficiently and that includes keeping the water in good condition. Just like your swimming pool, your hot tub operates a filtering system and helps keep the water fresh.

Unlike a swimming pool, however, it’s important to empty the tub and refill it with fresh water every so often. A hot tub has a much smaller volume of water compared to a large spa or swimming pool. The water is also kept at a much higher temperature which means that the water has slightly different properties.

All sorts of things can get into your hot tub water and not all of it is managed effectively by the filter system. Oils and even traces of soap can end up contaminating the water and will build up over time.

You’ll notice there’s a problem if the water starts to foam a little more or becomes cloudy.

You should test your water regularly and there will be manufacture instructions on how to do this. A lot will depend on how often you use your hot tub and the number of people it fits. A smaller 2 seat tub will contain about 650 to 700 litres of water which will need to be changed more often than a larger tub, say a 4 seat one that holds twice that amount of water.

For many tubs, the average time you can go without changing the water is about three months. If you’ve just had your tub serviced, it may last a bit longer. If it hasn’t been properly cleaned in a while, changing the water makes sense to avoid any potential health problems.
