Can You Use a Hot Tub in Winter? Of Course, You Can!

One of the big issues for hot tub lovers in the UK is whether you can use it during the winter months. For many, the summer is prime hot tub time and owners often drain their pool in the Autumn and cover it up for the winter.

At Aqua Design and Leisure, we actually think this is a waste of a great hot-tubbing opportunity. Of course, you’re not going to want to get in your hub tub every day during the winter. But what about when it snows, or on a crisp, frosty day? There’s nothing better than sitting down in a warm hot tub and enjoying the winter weather.

There’s the steam rising off the surface of the water for a start. Those relaxing warm jets also seem to deliver more of a punch to the body which relaxes and massages in equal measures.

And not all winter days are cold, there have been some pretty mild ones in recent years. They’re perfect for getting in the warm water and relaxing for a while after work.

You might wonder what the walk back to the house is going to be like or how cold it’s going to be once you get out of the water. The benefits you get from a blast of cold air are actually good for you - it gets the blood flowing and can make you feel refreshed and invigorated.

How to Set Up Your Hot Tub For Winter

Whether you decide to use your hot tub in winter or not, you’re still going to need a good cover. This helps keeps the leaves and debris off, especially from Autumn onwards, but it also acts as a layer of insulation when not in use.

Another worry that people commonly have is the potential for freezing pipes, especially if we’re hit with a really cold spell. Some models come with freeze protection systems. A floating thermal blanket is also another good option for your hot tub kit to help keep the water above a certain temperature.

We advise that you check your water levels regularly to make sure they are not too low as this can affect the pump and heater. It’s a good idea also to make a commitment to use your hot tub regularly during the winter and not just ‘once in a blue moon’.

Shutting Your Hot Tub For the Winter

If you do decide to close off your hot tub and winter dips don’t appeal to you, it’s important to flush your system and drain the tub. You’ll need to remove the filters, clean and dry them and place them somewhere safe for the winter. Some systems require you to blow the jets to get rid of any excess water – the last thing you want is for these to freeze up and cause damage.

Always make sure you check the manufacturer’s instructions before you prep for winter as different hot tubs may have slightly different procedures.

If you haven’t yet thought about trying your hot tub over the winter, we strongly advise that you give it a go. You may be pleasantly surprised to discover that it’s fun, relaxing and healthy.
