Prepping your Spa for Winter Use

Hot tubs and swim spas are not just for summer use!

Using your spa during the winter months is a great way of easing away those aches and pains. We advise against closing your spa over the winter months to help avoid potential issues from freezing pipes. Below is our guide for prepping your spa for the colder weather.

Step 1:

Stock up on the supplies and chemicals you need to get you through the winter months (making sure these are safely stored away from animals and children).

Step 2:

To avoid any cold weather problems, keep your spa operational. Many spas come with freeze protection systems, however another option is to use a floating thermal blanket to keep the water above a certain temperature. Prepare your spa by thoroughly vacuuming your pool and brush all the walls and floor as best you can, making it as clean as possible.

Step 3:

You’re going to need a good cover. This helps keep the leaves and debris out from Autumn onwards, but it also helps insulate your spa when not in use. A good hot tub cover is like a tight-fitting lid that locks in heat and water. During the winter months water evaporates quickly and heat loss can make your heater work overtime. Check your water levels regularly making sure they are not too low as this can affect the heater and pumps.

Step 4:

Whilst the weather is slightly cooler it is a good idea to do a complete water drain and refill to get it in good condition ready for use.

Step 5:

Should you decide to close down your Hot Tub over the winter months it is important to flush your system and drain the tub. You’ll need to remove the filters, clean and dry them and place somewhere safe. Some systems require you to blow the jets to get rid of any excess water to avoid them freezing up and causing damage. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your model before you prep for winter as models may have slightly different procedures.
